D-Lab Message on Science, Discovery, and Safety (MSDS)
Welcome to our research group. We hope that you will have a rewarding and productive time in our lab. During your stay, you will experience the joy of scientific discovery amidst a supportive and collaborative environment. The resources at Stanford – including the facilities, faculty, staff, and students – are world-class, and I encourage you to enjoy these resources to their fullest potential. Approach your work with an open and collaborative spirit, and please be generous with the time you devote to your science and scientific outreach.
When starting work in our group, it is important that you review our safety guidelines and protocols. Safety is our top priority. Before any experiment, assess the hazards you may encounter. If you are not familiar with a procedure, please ask for assistance from someone more experienced. In general, you should familiarize yourself with chemical safety and the materials safety data sheets. Also be aware of laser safety, compressed gas safety, and cryogenic material safety. Successful science starts with safety.
Group Outreach
Stanford Splash! Teaching Program Stanford Splash is a bi-annual weekend event that invites local 7th-12th graders to come to campus and take a range of classes from Stanford students. In the last few years, Katherine, Michelle, and Alice have taught classes on the science of invisibility, Latex, graph theory, puzzle-solving (see the microscopic clue in the electron micrograph below, courtesy of Brian!), and even watercolor painting!
The Make-HER Workshop: Light, Photonics, and Fun! Alice, Alex, Fariah, and Michelle participate in The Make-HER Workshop on February 24th, 2016 at the Sunnyvale Public Library, which aims to inspire girls and their mothers to pursue STEM fields. Interactive demos were designed to demonstrate concepts of light, including refraction, diffraction, and optical illusions. Specials thanks to Priya and IEEE’s Women in Photonics Group for organizing the fun event!
Life Art Science Technology (LAST) Festival Jen shared childhood dreams and the group’s work at the first LAST festival on June 7, 2015. Meanwhile, Alice, Brian, and Guru set up demos to showcase colorful quantum dots and silver nanoparticles! The festival celebrates the creativity of art and science by bringing together experts in space exploration, nanotechnology, and animation, as well as providing special performances and exhibits. Special thanks to Piero Scaruffi for organizing the event!
